HE IS VICTORIOUS: because of Christ’s victory, we do not have to be victims

Today is Resurrection Day, a time that recognizes the day Christ rose with all power in his hands!

Many people are also now referring to this day as Resurrection Day. I do as well. More people are realizing that term “Easter” has nothing to do with the recognition of Christ’s resurrection. Easter is actually a pagan worship of a false goddess (the word “Easter” stems from her name). The goddess is a fertility goddess (thus the symbolic us of eggs & bunnies, which tend to have many babies). Somehow, this pagan worship got confused with the timing of the day which recognizes the day Christ was resurrected. Christ went to the cross to save us. Eggs and bunnies did not go to the cross for us.

Christ was always here from the beginning with his Father.
John: 1:1-5 states, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2) The same was in the beginning with God. 3) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4) In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5) And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

The “Word” is speaking of Christ. God sent Christ to earth as perfect flesh. He sent his beloved son to represent Him; sent his son to save humankind from death and sin. Christ was well-received by a multitude of people, but by others Christ was scourned, mocked and ultimately tortured & crucified. He went through this willingly because of his great love for us. Because of God’s great love for us, He sent His son to be the one-time solution to redeem us. God raised His beloved son and Christ lives eternally with the Father. Seeing as God & Christ have infinite love for us, it only makes sense that we genuine love for Them rises up in us, too. God the Father & Christ the Savior have done SO much for us, it only makes sense to recognize this and be eternally grateful. We did not deserve such a great love, yet it is given as a gift and a grace.

Luke: 24:2-3 says, “And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3) And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.”

John: 11:25-27 says, “Jesus said unto her, ‘I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live 26) And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?’ 27) She saith unto him, ‘Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.’ “

Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we do not have to be overcome with sin. Christ defeated sin and so through faith in him we can do the same. Christ defeated death and so through him we can do the same; being spiritually renewed. Even if we die in this earthly flesh, death in earthly bodies is NOT the end.  So what is important is that we can have eternal life in God’s Kingdom with our spirits (which do not die) inhabiting new, Heavenly bodies. Just have faith and live to do God’s will (which is best for our lives).

2 Corinthians 5:1-10 states, “5) For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. 2) We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. 3) For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies. 4) While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life. 5) God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.

6) So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. 7) For we live by believing and not by seeing. 8) Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. 9) So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. 10) For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.”

If you have faith, be strenghthened! If you do not have faith, I pray that you will so that you can have life in Christ!

Romans 10:9 – “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

“The Peace of Christ”, mixed media on foam core, 2015

I had done this drawing for a Christmas joint exhibit two years ago at my alma mater, Claflin University. The cross, of course, is a reminder of Christ’s great love for humankind; the salvation he brought us. The dove is a well-known symbol of peace. Purple is the color of royalty. Please forgive the blurry photo! Hope to replace this image with a sharper one, soon.

WHATWHYWHENHOW: Artwork Analysis 16

Hey, everyone. I am hoping you are well, safe and enjoying some art or something cultural, lately. Right now as I type, it is April 5th, Wednesday (so when I actually PUBLISH this post it will be Thursday because I want to post it early, right now it is too late on Wednesday; I do not like posting too late). It’s been a while since I’ve done an artwork analysis. Right now it is also raining pretty heavily (and lightning!) which is nice because it seems to make things more relaxing & calm. Great way to get myself in the mood to work on a post! Also, as I type, have my Google Play set to the Santigold station; listening to eclectic stuff from Santigold, M.I.A., La Roux, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Little Dragon, Grimes, etc. I listen to all sorts of music across musical genres. Helps to feed my creativity! Currently, I am also working on a few new drawings (the progress of which was the subject of my last blog post). I was drawing before I stopped to write this post. I hope that you will enjoy the following artwork analysis!

“Escaparse (Escape)”, mixed media on paper, 2016.

WHAT: As you can see, this is a woman’s head floating in profile with feathers seemingly growing from her head & face. There are also colored abstract shapes radiating from the side of her face. What if you saw someone with feathers growing out of their head? Would that freak you out? Or would you be silently amazed and still slightly uncomfortable? The closest we can actually get to having feathers coming out of our heads is to wear them in our hair.  ………..I did that in college. Yep. I wanted to express myself and I wanted to connect to the indigenous (Native American) lineage I have, so I placed feathers in my hair. My beloved Grandmother (my Mom’s mother) talked some about her Native lineage. She has passed away, but to look at her you would think she was full-blooded Native American. She was part Afro-American and part Native American (maybe other types of lineage, too).  When I look back at my feathers in hair days, I think, “What was I even doing? Oh, well.”

WHY: This drawing visually expresses the need and want of freedom (hence the title of it; “escaparse” is Spanish for “escape”). The feathers represent the freedom birds have through their ability of flight. People love to be able to take flight and go places, even without the use of feathers/wings. I love to travel when I can. Near or far. I hope to travel more! Travel takes you out of your comfort place and expands your geographical and sensitivity walls. Travel gives you opportunity to see, hear, feel and just simply experience new things. Meet new people. Appreciate the blessing of people & the blessing of this world even more. So the “why” for this drawing comes from an internal love of travel and the desire to be kind of a wanderer. Priorities and money issues get in the way, so often people do not travel as often as they’d like to. If I could, I would be that constant traveler who is often away from home. I’d go with companions at first, but then after a while, I’d probably be that type to be brave and start doing it on my own around the world. I would also not mind being a travel photographer. So if there is anybody in the industry reading this: hire me, please! I take great photographs, too! I thank God for the places I have been able to go, however. Different states I’ve visited. Also during cruises with Princess and with Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, I’ve visited a few gorgeous islands (St. Lucia and Barbados are favorites) & also Mexico. I will always remember those times. I will also always remember that during my first cruise in 2009 (on the Ruby Princess), I was strolling happily around the ships levels and I stopped to listen to a lady playing the piano so beautifully. I got out my camera to record, though, because the bizarre thing is she was playing the theme from “Titanic”!! On a ship! I was like, “What?? No waaaay!” I wonder if she did that to be funny or if it was an irony she did not catch. Lol. It was creepily hilarious. I will ALSO never forget that when we returned from the cruise, a few hours later we went to see the world disaster film “2012” that just came out. To see a movie scene of a sinking ship RIGHT after ending a cruise trip is indeed many insane levels of ironic and highly unforgettable…………

WHEN: I produced this drawing last year! This is my shortest explanation in this post. Lol.

HOW: I produced this with a post-modern art frame of mind; utilizing realism blended with abstract elements. The material I used is paper, of course, worked over with graphite (pencil) for the laying out and the groundwork detailing, charcoal (black and white) and colored pencil. I do not often do a sketch (which I call the “bones” of a piece of art) first and then lay over that with the final workings, instead I most often just go straight into the fleshing out. I also used a real feather to model the grouping of feathers from. I love the beauty and technical, structural genius of feathers. As is said, God is the Original Artist. Indeed! I am fascinated by His works (which include our own bodies) everyday. Intelligent Design from Supremely Intelligent God.

I hope you have enjoyed my post and there will certainly be more coming; I have ideas for so many! Util then, please visit often; even re-reading posts! Thank you!

FACE TIME: new drawing alert!

Hi, readers & viewers! I am trying to post as regularly as I can and as my schedule will allow for. I am also doing other art-focused things like contacting art consultants as I search for representation, going to update my RedBubble account (have not used that in a long while) & re-open my Etsy shop online. I also recently FINALLY got on the “Insta-bus”…I now have an Instagram account! So now, at the bottom of my posts, there will be an Instagram link along with my usual Twitter link (I have so many social accounts, now…becoming some sort of social media guru here). I have included my other links (Coroflot, Etsy, ShopVida & Tumblr) at the top of this WordPress blog. No matter what happens, I do not want to put down art. I stick with it! It is an important part of my life that I love and it is one of the things I do to have joy and to shake off some stress.

Lately, I have been creating new works. I want to experiment, add new work to my portfolio and use these works (along with past works) to market myself more. This post shows one of the new works detailing a face (hence the title of this post). It is a drawing (graphite and pen, so far) on paper. I have a big, fat drawing pad (amongst other drawing pads) to fill and so I am going to make the most of it! I was working on this more last night. I still have to add more features & detailing; also do something to the background. An idea for a background is one of an artist’s terrors. It is also one of those points where artist block tends to happen, too. You want to do something that does not overpower the main focus of the work, but you also want it to work WITH the main focus…you also want it to NOT look terrible. I finally mustered up in my mind what I can do with the background. Some sort of weird (because in art, weird can be good) linear (line) work with a great dash of polygon forms (polygonal design is the “Popular Kid” of the art world, now). Some color will be nice, too. I can’t wait to see my ideas spill from my brain and onto this paper. Fun!

Well, I hope you enjoyed this fairly swift post and I hope you will check me out on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, RedBubble, Etsy and the other 1 billion accounts I have (lol…not really THAT many, but it feels like it)!! Thank you!!

No title, yet, of course! This shows a couple of the tools I am using! I see I also wrinkled my drawing. Wrinkled, bent paper drives me NUTS! The drawing itself will still finish out great, though!

INSTA-BUS: i hopped on the instagram bus

I finally started posting stuff on Instagram (since last week)! I’ve had an account for a while, but I never took time to post anything. I’ve so many social accounts that I just wasn’t feeling like posting to Instagram. Well, I decided to finally go ahead and be active with that account. I posted this today. It’s a drawing In working on!

If you think you can guess who I’m drawing, post a reply! Here’s another hint: the subject’s adventures have FINALLY been scripted for a long awaited film! Gamers, rejoice!

Time to Create Another Commissioned Piece: Google+ post

Just a quick update on a new work I’ve been commissioned to do. I’ve been gone from WordPress for awhile. Have been busy and also dealing with a profound tragedy involving a loved one (which I may explain more about soon when my emotions can deal with sharing here). I am grateful to God for making it through another year (I also had a birthday this month, too). It was a rough year at times, but there were positive moments, too. I hope everyone is well and that everyone will have a wonderful, joyful Christmas (Jesus is the reason always) and a happy, safe New Year.

WHATWHYWHENHOW: Artwork Analysis 15

manga.happy, mixed media, 2013-2014

What: This is a graphite (pencil) drawing of a manga character which I conceptualized. While anime is Japanese animation, manga (漫画) is Japanese comics and cartoons. Through reading about manga, I learned that a mangaka (漫画家) is translated as a comic artist or cartoonist and also refers to the manga author whom is often Japanese. I guess because I am getting more into this art form, then I am a wannabe mangaka!

Why: I am in my 30s and yes…I am a “girl gamer” or more correctly “WOMAN gamer”. Or how about “lady gamer?” Not ashamed! Nope! Video games have come a long way from Mario and Duckhunt (although I did play those & I respect early games for being foundations of the gaming we have now). Games are very visually and technically sophisticated now. Also being that I am an artist, the visuals appeal to me very much (there is a debate on whether video games, visually, can be art and I say “yes”). So I have a PS3 and have gotten quite serious about gaming (I do not destroy TVs or spend every waking hour playing games, though, so not THAT serious). The characters from the Persona games inspired me to get more interested in manga and anime. I’ve had an interest in that already and did a couple of earlier art pieces (which I’ll do posts on eventually), but my interest became more concrete around 5 years ago. Manga’s outlandishly fun and highly creative appearance fascinates me. By the way, I’ve never finished a Persona game! The battles get super hard as you progress! I am currently playing “Mass Effect 3” (the imaginary characters, the missions and exploring so much in the games is fun and challenging), have played many Call of Duty games, Assassin’s Creed games (started 2 or 3 of them, but not finished them…those are unbelievably long games, amirite!?), Remember Me, Shadow of the Colossus (gorgeous game), some of Mirror’s Edge (which simply pissed me off, but it’s still a very cool game), Heavy Rain (which has to be the MOST EPICALLY depressing game of ALL TIME) and others. My favorite is the Uncharted series. The adventure! The interesting characters! The dynamic scenery! I’ve played the 1st three. When the 4th was introduced in PS4, I became sad because I don’t have a PS4!! Cruelty! One day, PS4, one day… I will get it just to be able to play Uncharted 4. By the way, I am glad Mark Wahlberg (whom was to play main character Nathan) dropped out of the Uncharted film production. Mark is a very neat actor and all, but, no…….  Just NO. Mark playing Nate Drake? No all day. Amirite??

When: This drawing was started in 2013 and finished in 2014. So sometimes I’ll date any posting about it as 2014, even though I wrote 2013 on the drawing.

How: This drawing was achieved using graphite and colored pencil on paper. The drawing is very linear, the main element focus being the line-work (in the contours and detailing). I wanted to base the character on something in order to build. I built upon the emotion of happiness. To relate the work even more to the Asian culture, I used other Asian elements: the Japanese characters (in glowing orange) translate as “happy” (kofuku 幸福) and on her clothing there are clouds; in Chinese culture clouds symbolize happiness. I even used the traditional style these is seen in Chinese drawings and paintings of clouds. The color blue is a calming color, calmness being as emotionally positive as happiness. In the background is, of course, the familiar and bold Japanese representation of the sun and its rays. The sun is also very often representative of happiness, joy, life. All in all, this character is an imaginary figure conveying happy vibes! I plan on doing more manga characters representing other emotions.

I hope you enjoyed this post! I actually published an earlier post while on the early stages of the drawing. You can read that HERE.

I’M STILL AROUND: the absent artist

I miss you, WordPress. I am coming back for you.... *weep* *weep*

I miss you, WordPress and Tumblr, too. I am coming back for you….
*weep* *weep*

Hello, my precious blog readers!

I am still alive.

Lol.

I have been gone from WordPress for quite a while due to a variety of circumstances. I haven’t even been blogging on Tumblr, either. Some of the reasons are good, some bad. Some solvable, some difficult. In the meantime, I hope you have been still reading the variety of posts and pages I have here. Like any reading material, blogs can be visited over and over even if the author is not currently active or adding new material. Apparently, people have still been visiting my page because I now have 66 Followers and I am grateful for that! Thank you to all my Followers and to all my visitors!!

Right now, I am having laptop issues, again. I believe the motherboard might have fritzed on me, again. The death of a computer or, at least, a comatose computer, can turn upside-down the world of someone who spends a great deal of time on a computer! Seriously! Yes, life still goes on, but the computer part of my life has been stunted. I have been using my cell phone for a variety of things, but I cannot much use it for blogging (the platform my phone uses will allow me to blog, but I can’t include images with posts and if I dare use my cell to edit existing posts that have images, the images weirdly disappear). I hope to get my laptop fixed, soon (for one thing, a really good friend of mine gifted me with a drawing tablet, thank God!!…so that baby needs to be put to use; right now it is lingering in my room in its box fresh and unspoiled) and I also need to save up for a new one laptop (I love HP; I might try a Mac-the brand that apparently every artist in the world should have). If my laptop was a living object, though, it would be saying to itself, “I like her, but she uses me to within an inch of my tech life! I am glad I do not work right now! I hope she takes a VERY LOOOONG time to fix me because I am on DV Time, right now!!”

DV Time is ‘Device Vacation Time’.

But while I have been on blogging hiatus, I have been working on art here and there, though I shame myself for slowing down on it so much. Aaargh! I need to get back to creating art. I am MAD at myself. While away from blogging, I have also been going to church (I sing on the choir as well), working, spending time with people I am close to, spending time outside enjoying nature (which I might have to withdraw from some, since Fall is already putting a chilly smack-down on us), playing video games (yes, I am a gamer girl and yes……I do rage quit, but without breaking stuff) & various other things. There is also a holiday-themed alumni art exhibit coming up at my alma mater, Claflin University. So, I am now putting myself on a mandatory mission to create 2-3 new works. I have to turn in my works for the show by Nov. 20th, which is not very far off, so I better get to drawing at psycho levels.

Well, I do hope everyone has been well and I do hope that I will be back to blogging regularly, soon! Until then, I am going to re-blog some previous posts and also please feel free to read my blog through and through! THANKS!!

UPDATE: my second time with five minutes of artist fame!

Hello! Quick post, here!

On March 19th, I published a post that was about my drawing of Psycho Les from the rap/hip hop group The Beatnuts. Here is the drawing I did in 2002:

Psycho Les Charcoal on paper. 2002.

And here are the two posts about it (both posts are identical) on WordPress and Tumblr.

Well, I shared both the WordPress and Tumblr links with my Twitter timeline and it was Favorited and re-Tweeted (“RT’d” in Twitter speak). I appreciate the Favorites and RTs from everyone, by the way! Well, one of the RT’s was from Psycho Les himself!!!! He re-Tweeted my Tumblr link!! I totally geeked out, too!! It is really cool and nice of him to have liked my post and drawing enough to have shared it to his timeline… When cool stuff like this happens, it’s much less about bragging and more about self-promotion. Here is the evidence below (his Twitter tag is “Psycho Les/Beatnuts!”):

Notification. I was like..."Waaaiiit a minute. Is that????..."

This is what the RT (re-Tweet) looks like on his timeline.

This is when I thanked them both for sharing my drawing & post and also when I had my geek out moment. I'm not ashamed! Lol... Famous people are people, too, but it is still cool that this happened.

Well, there ya go! My second five minutes of artist fame with a famous person and it is appreciated! My FIRST five minutes of artist fame involved President Obama. You can read about that HERE. A humbling moment (I geeked out profusely, though)!

I hope you have enjoyed reading this and feel free to explore around my blog. Thank you! (More posts coming…)

ETCH ABOUT A SKETCH: my sketches 4

Hi, all! Every now and again, I will post sketches I’ve done. Since they are my sketches and not my fine art pieces, they do not see a whole lot of light of day as they are holed up in a notebook, computer/laptop or flash drive. These are some examples of the bare bones of my art. Some are quick sketches, others look more complete. Please enjoy! Thanks!

Psycho Les Charcoal on paper. 2002.

Psycho Les
Charcoal on paper. 2002.

Really, this is not a sketch (since it is a finished piece), but it has a sketchy look. I like the hurried, frantic look of it.

Remember The Beatnuts? Oldheads (like me…I am in my 30s) will remember. If you are a youngster who only listens to Bieber, Selena Gomez, Drake & so on, might not know The Beatnuts unless you appreciate any music done before 2005 or if you Google. The Beatnuts are a rap/hip hop duo from New York. They were quite big back in the day (1990s-2000s).

The two guys went by the names Psycho Les (Lester Fernandez) and JuJu (Jerry Tineo. Here is a quick drawing I did of Psycho Les. I was visiting family near Atlanta, during the Summer, when I did this. I was trying a new style technique that communicates nearly every detail into exaggerated line-work. Depending on how it is used, line can be very expressive and can communicate a lot of feeling.

By the way, this post marks my 100th POST on WordPress (and that’s not counting my 16 published pages-pages are my minor publishings, here, while my posts are the main)! Cartwheels are in order!! But I will not attempt to really do cartwheels at home because I might break stuff. So, I will do cartwheels in my mind…  : )
