Another in a series of analyses on my art. This one’s OVERDUE!!: This is my FIRST REAL post since LAST YEAR (The update posts about my smashed laptop screen and other weirdness do not really count as posts…not to me, anyhow)!! Still waiting on that laptop screen replacement, but 3 weeks should finally do it. Thanks to my precious readers & new readers for still reading my blog and being patient for another post!!  : )

UPDATE: I have been asked (by a fellow art student alumnus) to have a solo art exhibit at her parents’ art studio/gallery. Her parents are artists as well. I will have it this Fall! Yippee (Don’t know who says “yippee” anymore, but it is fun all the same)! Also, I have work to do on two logos for a friend’s non-profit. I’ve done a logo for her before & so this project should tie in well with the 1st logo. Thanking God for all the blessings! (I used alot of exclamation marks, huh?)

DON’T EVEN ASK… & DON’T EVEN ASK…II

What:  Exaaaactly what the titles state (yes, those ARE the titles and not me being a HUGE MEGA douchebag): don’t even ask! Well, you can if you want to (in person or in the comment box), but I would not know what to say because WHAT these pieces are is actually me throwing ideas out of  my brainbox just for the sake of  ideas and visual satisfaction. They are an amalgamation (BIG word usage alert) of more than one object magically joined with Adobe love. Digital marraige. Wow. They are actually architectural structures, but just to be an artsy jerk, I won’t divulge what those structures are. You gotta guess!! Haha! Man. That did sound pretty jerky……..

Why: The new crop of extremely post-post modern art (I wonder how many posts art can have…a great mystery) is a pretty big influence on me, right now. I am in awe of the lengths these artists’ minds go to create beautiful and profoundly imaginative, conceptualized art that make viewers go: “WOW, art is AWESOME!” and that make the artist him/herself go: “What the hell did I just do?…but it’s cool, though.” I also LOVED the architectural structures that I came across on a trip to Florida (adore going there) and went photo crazy! Remember…usually only artists are mentally/emotionally enamored of things like architectural details to the point of  fainting  when we see the potential in it for a drawing, painting or photograph… It’s like a cornucopia of creative possibilities!! So that is the why: The new wave of art, beautiful architecture and the irresistable opportunity to transform those ideas in Photoshop. HEAVEN!!

The other why has to do with me doing two. Simply, I wanted to try two different approaches visually. And you know…it would be cool if put side by side, they would form a diptych (“a work made up of two matching parts”-http://merriam-webster.com/dictionary/diptych). I would display them side by side in my exhibit! The main why would be trying things and progression. It’s important for artists to grow in their artistic experimentation. OR YOU WILL BE LIKE STALE BREAD. Yuck.

When: I produced these two pieces last year. I was Adobe crazy!  When I get my laptop back, I will be going at it, again. Don’t worry…I haven’t forgotten how to draw or paint!

How: The pieces were generated with my imagination, first of all (thanks, brain!) and nextly with digital photography and Adobe. As stated above, they are titled don’t even ask… and don’t even ask…II (the ellipses, the dots, are intentional to indicate pondering; like this…  The works cause much ponderance. I like that word. For some reason, I feel British or like a person from the Victorian age. Anyway, waaay off topic……..). I really do hope viewers find something to like in both pieces! Whether it is the structures (which I still won’t reveal!), the coloring, the textures, the composition or the everything. In both of them, I wanted to mix it up as far as joining the parts; thereby resulting in a labyrinth (really goin’ all out on this wording) of overlapping and intersecting posts and beams and framework. Fun to look at, I feel! I personally favor the 2nd one with its sharp and gritty, raw black and white hitting against the saturated blues and black. The1st one I find a liking toward as well. The popping Pop art red contrasting so sharply with the blue is shocking! Which one do most visually catches YOUR eye? Or do they both? Feel free to comment on that, too!

GO!!GO!!GO!!!!

What:  This is an artistic rendering of road rage, but mainly a visual translation of alacrity, rapidity, swiftness, swiftness – SPEED! I could’ve just said speed, but I wanted to do a little word mess-around and make some readers think, “This girl is silly, ridiculous, juvenile & asinine.” That last one is a bit harsh. Anyhow, the MAIN point of this piece of art is speed & the fast life of the city conveyed through a graphic work. The undertone is road rage. Too bad REAL road rage isn’t as fun as it looks in this work. In REAL life, road rage is alot uglier with yelling, middle fingers and curse words, profanity, vulgarity, blasphemy…let me quit before I get some 3- & 4-letter comments from folks.

Why: I was basically bored. You may not know it, unless you are an artist, but BOREdom can often be a producer of some of the most creative stuff. Probably because stuff just starts to flow out of our heads and we don’t even care what it is, as long as it’s something. So I was bored. I was also VERY influenced by the artworks we see in ads, lately. You know the kind. An object (a cell phone, for example) will be accompanied by all these trippy, super-mod visual effects like elliptical circles, beautiful floral work and
stars bursting around it. These days, ads make you feel as if you got punched in the eyes with colors, shapes and digital everything, but it is really fun to see. Like bedazzled, eye candy. Like graffiti without the actual graffiti. So, inspiration: boredom and extremely trippy  art.

When: This was completed in an obvious artist-freak-out frenzy this year. Nah…I didn’t freak out, but I did Photoshop for 4 hours, staying up until 4am working on this. If an artist’s computer could speak, it would say, “Go to BED!! I am overheated and pissed, you masking, copy/pasting, filtering, layering wretch.”

How: How I created this piece? With the use of my overheating laptop (borrowed from my boyfriend…if you read one of my earlier posts, you will be reading about how MY laptop was desecrated *sniff* & yet to be fixed). When high CPU – usage programs like Adobe programs are used, they can really heat up a laptop, so that soon it feels like hellfire is breathing from it…that’s why a cooling pad is a great invention, contraption, gadget, device………..okay…

i spit up colors and prettythings

WHAT: Isn’t it easy to see??? This is my mind HIGH on art. My mind puked all over my laptop screen (which I am bemoaning, by the way…that tragedy is explained in my next article). But no (I started a sentence with “but”…bad girl). This is a work actually inspired by action art amongst things…or what some may call “splatter” or “splash” art. Here’s a definition of action painting for all yous (hey, I’m a New Englander, yous is ya’ll up there…I still say “caw-fee”):

(noun) – Action Painting emphasizes the process of making art, often through a variety of techniques that include dripping, dabbing, smearing, and even flinging paint on to the surface of the canvas. These energetic techniques depend on broad gestures directed by the artist’s sense of control interacting with chance or random occurrences. For this reason, Action Painting is also referred to as Gestural Abstraction. The artists and the various techniques are associated with the movement Abstract Expressionism and The New York School of the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s (for example, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline).
The term “action painting” was invented by the critic Harold Rosenberg and appeared for the first time in his article “American Action Painters” (ArtNews, December 1952).
In France, action painting and Abstract Expressionism are called Tachisme (Tachism).Pronunciation: ack·shun payn·ting – from about.com

That is a definition for action painting, but I feel this can apply to any media, including graphic art. The difference is, instead of using my body and hand to fling pots of paint around convulsively and psychotically, I hid that seemingly demented behavior behind flinging pots of pixels using my finger & touchpad…ha.

WHY: As I mentioned above, my inspiration was action art, hence the title above (yes, it really IS called “i spit up colors and prettythings”- an artistic “throwing up” of sorts), but my initial muses were pieces of eclectic, ultra modern, visually far out art I saw while on vacay on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. There are over 9,800 awesome artworks on that titanic (bad choice of words, I know, but prayerfuly meaningless) ship, most of which were comissioned especially for Oasis. So, in between boogie boarding, island stops, near 24 hour belly-stuffing, seeing dudes in kilts & drinking shots, I viewed the wonders of post-post modern art! Love the simplicity, but at once fresh in your face-ness of this type of art. Thanks, muses!…….and BoozeMan (our dinner drink waiter), thank you, too.

WHEN: I created this last year. 2010. THE year for graphic action art. No, not really. But (I did it, again!) it was my year for it ( I did two others in a series) and I will do it this year, too!

HOW: I used my digital art drug of choice – Adobe CS4. I won’t divulge a WHOLE lot, but I will say I was like a kid in a techno candy store! Virtual splashings everywhere! All it takes is selecting brush types and stroking the hell out of my keypad!

WHAT: A peculiar piece with a peculiar name. I bet a lot of you looking are wondering one of two things: “What the hell is that??” or “What the hell is that…it looks like an alien mountain range from an aerial perspective.” Well, the second statement is closer because though that is not exactly what it is, it is weird like an alien mountain range and it is…just weird. But I like weird. Sometimes, in these analyses that I write, I won’t fully explain stuff. Just give hints because it still is entertaining for you all to just guess! As I worked on this, which is graphic art, I felt it resembled a mountain range from above, too…but more like a fantasy one from one of those Tolkien stories (I.e. “Lord of the Rings” books). It is what it is…and it’s weird. Nice weird.

WHY: Why did I do this? No, I am asking YOU why I did this because it is hard to say. Maybe you can enlighten me. I guess I did this, really, to experiment in my digital lab of curiosities. I always like to progress and see what else I can do, which is more than drawings, paintings in a realistic or natural vein. I can do other things, too. So I told myself, “Let’s go crazy & do something different, even if it there is no visual logic to it!” As long as it made at least some sense visually, as far as color theory (those colors are there for a reason) and other elements. In art, design elements are the basic building blocks of art, by the way. Color, illusion of space, illusion of motion, line, value, shape/volume & texture. There are design principles, too, which is the more technical side to creating art, but get into that later…don’t feel like thinking toooo much right now.

WHEN: I produced this piece in 2010.

HOW: From within my digital lab of curiosity, remember?? Okay. Technically I did this using graphic magic conjured from my pixel and resolution wands in tandem. Okay. I see you are not buying that, either. I do have a digital lab, though. It is my laptop and it is also in my hard drive. That ever so useful Adobe CS (Creative Suite) software. The digital CRACK for devotees. It is that addictive. Adobe CS (I have CS4, but CS5 version, with even more wacky & addictive applications, is out now) is a premier collection of software: Illustrator, Photoshop (yep, and it goes waaaaaay beyond airbrushing celebrities, lemme tell you), InDesign, DreamWeaver (for web-work), Flash and A LOT more. I am getting faint-ish thinking about it! Drawing will forever be number one in my heart and practice, but Adobe’s some tasty candy on the side…

My Favorite Art Media: the right tools make the right art!!

I just wanted to put together a list of my favorite art media (supplies). I encourage you to post, in COMMENTS, your favorite(s) and why! (all definitions, in ITALICS,  are  from wikipedia.com)

1) GRAPHITE – The mineral graphite is one of the allotropes of carbon. It was named by Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1789 from the Ancient Greek γράφω (graphō), “to draw/write”,  for its use in pencils, where it is commonly called lead (not to be confused with the metallic element lead).

Graphite is my first media love because, besides crayons, it was the first tool I started to lear my craft with WAAAAY  back as a munchkin of 3 or4. Thanks, mom & teachers! I went from the HB that eveyone knows to more sophisticated pencils specifically for visual art, a cavalcade of posibilities varying in tone & grades (H is lighter and B is darker, HB & F, yes, F! are in the middle): I prefer lighter grades, like H to 3H for ex. for preliminary work. The darker tones, like 6B for ex., for finishing. Graphite is delicate and allows for great detailing! Endless effects!

2) CHARCOAL –Charcoal is the dark grey residue consisting of impure carbon obtained by removing water and other volatile constituents from animal and vegetation substances. Charcoal is usually produced by slow pyrolysis, the heating of wood or other substances in the absence of oxygen (see pyrolysis, char and biochar). The resulting soft, brittle, lightweight, black, porous material resembles coal. Charcoal in art: Charcoal is used in art for drawing, making rough sketches in painting and is one of the possible media for making a parsemage. It must usually be preserved by the application of a fixative. Artists generally utilize charcoal in three forms:

  • Vine charcoal is created by burning sticks of wood (usually willow or linden/Tilia) into soft, medium, and hard consistencies.[citation needed]
  • Compressed charcoal charcoal powder mixed with gum binder compressed into round or square sticks. The amount of binder determines the hardness of the stick. Compressed charcoal is used in charcoal pencils.
  • Powdered charcoal is often used to “tone” or cover large sections of a drawing surface. Drawing over the toned areas will darken it further, but the artist can also lighten (or completely erase) within the toned area to create lighter tones.

Before my sophisticated (yes…I am now a charcoal sophisticate) use of this medium developed, I was clunky and it was MESSY! I did NOT like it. But as it is dark and rich, not to mention one can get some funky effects from the fact it is messy, I kept being drawn to master it. Now, I utilize it just as if it were graphite. Depending on the grade (light or dark) and the pressure I use, charcoal can result in numerous appearances: lines, value work, textures. Possibilities are awesome!

3) OIL PAINT Oil paint is a type of slow-drying paint that consists of particles of pigment suspended in a drying oil, commonly linseed oil. The viscosity of the paint may be modified by the addition of a solvent such as turpentine or white spirit, and varnish may be added to increase the glossiness of the dried film. Oil paints have been used in Europe since the 12th century for simple decoration, but were not widely adopted as an artistic medium until the early 15th century.

Oil paint…what can I say? It really is a glorious medium. I have always adored it. Even in the early stages of using it when I had to try and master blending one color or value into another, avoiding the look of color-block. If one doesn’t blend correctly in ANY media (paint, graphite, etc., the result can be a blatant visual jump from one color or value to the next instead of a natural blend. HATE that! Anyhow, I am mentally AND emotionally…even spiritually…taken in by the richness of and the 3D illusion that oils can give! That house really does appear it is in the distance or his skin appears as though one can actually touch flesh. WOW. And the colors & neutrals (non-colors like white, black, brown)  just speak volumes!

4) DIGITAL ARTDigital art is a general term for a range of artistic works and practices that use digital technology as an essential part of the creative and/or presentation process. Since the 1970s, various names have been used to describe the process including computer art and multimedia art, and digital art is itself placed under the larger umbrella term new media art. The impact of digital technology has transformed traditional activities such as painting, drawing and sculpture, while new forms, such as net art, digital installation art, and virtual reality, have become recognized artistic practices.  More generally the term digital artist is used to describe an artist who makes use of digital technologies in the production of art. In an expanded sense, “digital art” is a term applied to contemporary art that uses the methods of mass production or digital media.

I became very aware of digital art in college. Then I fell off of it after graduating. When I was able to get the Adobe CS4 on my laptop (Creative Suite which has programs like Photoshop, InDesign & Dreamweaver in it, CS5 is already out w/ even MORE wicked tricks & applications) I started buggin out with it! Creating graphic art (creating art through digital means) & graphic design (laying out graphics through digital means, like ads) is full of possibilities. It’s also quick (unlike traditional art) to work with, depending on the project. And even though drawing & painting are first for me & are the cornerstones of visual art, there is an endless range & array of visual effects you don’t always get w/ traditional art. It’s like magic using your computer! I have heard even the most professional digital artist say “you can never learn all of Photoshop.” It’s that complex. It’s waaaaaaaaaaay more than simply airbrushing celebrities for a magazine. You’d have to use it to understand…

4)DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY – Digital photography is a form of photography that uses an array of light sensitive sensors to capture the image focused by the lens, as opposed to an exposure on light sensitive film. The captured image is then stored as a digital file ready for digital processing (colour correction, sizing, cropping, etc.), viewing or printing.

Besides digital art, photography is another untraditional art form that is based in tradition. Photography is a fun and creative way to capturethe world and your perspective of it. Photography, in general, is just as exciting s digital really. Digital just makes it faster, more convenient,  less messier and more computer compliant (in application and artistically) to work with. Because of the he ability to upload digitally-taken images to computers, new realms of art creation have opened and are advancing constantly! The views to be expressed with this art form goes on and on.
